Book review: What are stars? By Katie Daynes and illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens.

Katie Daynes and Marta Alvarez Miguens have done a brilliant job at creating a book that is informative and fun all about stars.

We are big fans of Usborne publishers non-fiction and activity books for children in our home. This book did not disappoint and both my 1 and 3 year old think it is brilliant.

With its appealing, inclusive illustrations and many lift the flaps What Are Stars? is a book that many young children will want to read over and over again. The text used through out the book is simple and concise making it a brilliant read for preschoolers. This is a Very First Question and Answers book however, I do feel on some pages including an expert word or two would have been a great addition.

Each double page focuses on answering a question which is titled at the start of the page.  The questions are what you imagine a child to ask and include What are Stars? How many stars are there? And Can I visit a star?

On answering them the book does a great job at incorporating the lift the flaps. The sturdy lift the flaps will certainly appear to many and there are over 30 of them in the book!

The colourful illustrations are rather sweet and the darker tones used do a great job at setting a night scene, giving a realistic view of when stars can be seen.

What are Stars? is a super, informative book that provides teaching in a fun, interactive way. A great read that I’m sure will get your little ones talking.

  1. Great post!
We own a home based daycare/preschool that I’ve ran for the past 20+ years.. I am basically addicted to my children’s library, especially board books at the moment. I’ve posted a few things around my library as well.
I’ve never seen this Usborne title, thanks for sharing!! It’s super cute, I’m going to have to look for it! ☀️

    1. Thank you. It’s nice to know that I introduced to a new title.
