Book review of picture book Get Up Stand Up

My dad is a big fan of Bob Marley’s music so I’m looking forward to showing him this book. I might even challenge him to read it without singing. I certainly found it hard.

This is a great read for young readers encouraging kindness, to make the right choices and to have the courage to state when something is wrong. The text is based around Bob Marley’s song Get Up Stand Up but the lyrics have been adapted by the author Cedella Marley who is the eldest daughter of the music icon.

The book centres around a young girl who is confronted with several unhappy situations at school. The colourful illustrations by John Jay Cabuay depict the girls feelings so well and are sure to encourage more discussion surrounding emotions and how to treat others. The young girl is teased and made to feel uncomfortable and unhappy but along with positive action and some help from her peers things change.
