Frida Kahlo picture books.

I am delighted to bring you a blog post dedicated to the famous, Mexican born artist Frida Kahlo.

Recently my eldest daughter has been learning about different artists at school. Every half term the school focus on one particular artist but they are yet to focus on a female artist. We’ve had discussions about Frida Kahlo but with the help of these books my eldest daughter has learnt so much more about her.

Whether you have children as young as babies or children older then 8, there is a book in this piece that will be suited to their ages.

Lets start with a fantastic board book.

Frida Kahlo: My First Frida Kahlo (Little People, BIG DREAMS) by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Gee Fan Eng.Babies

Babies and toddlers will enjoys this cute but mighty board book all about a great Mexican painter. The book is a wonderful introduction to non-fiction text boasting with bold illustrations and a simple sentence on each double page.

It is great to see very young readers included in discovering brilliantly aspiring individuals. This edition would make a lovely gift and its board book format and small size makes it a lovely accessible read for little hands to explore.

Similar to it’s board book sister, Little People, Big Dreams Frida Kahlo hardback book, is aimed at readers 4 year olds and up. I have previously shared how fantastic the Little People, Big Dreams series and written a review on three other fantastic lives that are included in the series. You can see that post here        which includes Rosa Parks.

As well as the pages included in the board book version there is information about Frida Kahlo’s accident, a timeline of information with photos of Frida included and the text is age appropriate and more mature then the board book.

The book shares information about Frida Kahlo from childhood including how she fought polio. It informs readers about her passion for art even when she was bed bound and adds details about her personality. This book would be a wonderful resource in primary school, Key Stage 1.

Frida Kahlo: Little Guide to Great Lives: Little Guides to Great Lives by Isabel Thomas and illustrated by Marianna Madriz.

I was super excited when I saw that Laurence King publishers had released a new series of books celebrating great lives. This book does not disappoint and would be a fantastic book for readers 7 and up. I look forward to reading the others in the series.

Though the book may be small, don’t be deceived by its size as the book is bursting with information about Frida Kahlo. The book is over 60 pages long complete with an index, timeline and glossary. It explores Frida Kahlo’s life from childhood, sharing family trees and information about how life was in Mexico at the time.

The book is presented in such an engaging way. Illustrations set against a white background are detailed and fun and the varied layouts on each double page don’t make the format predictable. Something that I also think is wonderful, is the addition of Frida Kahlo’s thoughts which are written in a cursive red text.

The book is absolutely super and I highly recommend libraries to have copies of this brilliant read.

Readers will discover so much in these biographies of Frida Kahlo which are available in all good bookshops.
