Today it has been snowing and although it has settled, making our street look very pretty the sun is now out. However, this hasn’t deterred us from exploring snowy reads and the ones shared in this blog post are ones my daughters have enjoyed.
The Snowbear
The Snowbear is an adorably illustrated read based around two children who are immersed in a snowy day.
The beautiful snowy scenes brilliantly depict a snowy day and as many of us do on such a day, the two children decide to build a snowman. The snowman they build looks more like a snowbear and what a great one he is. Soon after building the snowbear the children take a journey on a magical sledge deep into the woods but are greeted by a wolf. Who will save them and return them safely home? The snowbear of course who proves to be a very kind and brave bear indeed. An enchanting story that isnt’t too text heavy for young readers like my 2 year old who absolutely loved this story.

National Trust: Up and Down, A Walk in the Countryside (National Trust: A walk in the countryside)
This is a brilliant baby and toddler friendly read, exploring opposites on a countryside walk. We found this in the library and my girls were immediately drawn to it. Who could resist that adorable inclusive front cover?

Snow (Seasons with Granddad)
This is a delightful book and made even more appealing in its small, mini gift edition. The nameless little boy in the story is super happy to be greeted by snow one morning. He can’t wait to play in the snow and proves to be such a patient child waiting for his grandfather to get ready! However, by the end of the story they both have great fun and conclude that fun in the snow was “definitely worth waiting for.”
Snow is an enjoyable read for toddlers and up, observing a lovely relationship between a grandfather and grandson. The boy learns so much from his wise grandparent and the respect and love he has for his elder is refreshing to observe.

Snow Bears
This is a lovely story all about a bear and her cubs. Mummy bear joins her cubs outside to play and states that her cubs look like snow bears and that’s when the story begins. Her cubs take on the role of snow bears and they all have lots of fun in the snow. The gentle illustrations and fluffy bears are appreciated by my eldest daughter. It just makes you want to play in the snow.
It’s a lovely read in that mummy bear joins in with their play and when it gets too cold the cubs return home. As the snow melts from their coats the cubs reveal that they were actually the snow bears, “We were playing tricks,” they announce. Martin Waddell is a very talented author who captures the innocence of a child well in this story. The responses the cubs give are so child like and make it an even more delightful read for little ones.

The girls have had great fun exploring these picture books. I wonder if we will have more snow come our way? We shall have to see.
